Creative Expression: Teaching music with joy
For two years in my undergraduate, I worked with percussionist and interdisciplinary artist Jennie Dorris as a Teaching Assistant for her unique program, Creative Expression, at Carnegie Mellon University's Music Preparatory School.
In Creative Expression, young musicians work together to create their own pieces of music. Each semester, they collaborate with a different community partner. Recent collaborators include Marita Garrett, mayor of Wilkinsburg; Syrian writer and refugee Osama Alomar; and seniors experiencing Alzheimer's.
In addition to the opportunity to collaborate closely, Creative Expression allows young musicians to find joy in music-making, to discover and express their own musical ideas.
